Seattle Program > Social Justice & Education > Retreats
Retreats
Two times during the GV Leadership Program, participants get together in fun and educational weekend retreats. Many of these take place at Camp Sealth (See description below). Given that students come from different backgrounds and high schools, the retreat provides participants with an opportunity to get to know one another and create lasting friendships. Retreat activities have included dancing and singing, campfires, hiking, games, cultural activities, exploring and enjoying nature, and the the Pro-Justice workshop. This workshop is led by Youth Board students and provides an opportunity for students to explore how race, class, gender, national identity, imperialism, and other social justice issues play a role in society. Of particular importance is how each student can become empowered to undo oppressions and how an awareness of these oppressions is of great importance in the context of our community work in the U.S. and especially in Guatemala.
Camp Sealth
Camp Sealth is located on the southwest side of Vashon Island and just a 15 minute ferry ride from West Seattle. It is owned and operated by Camp Fire USA. The camp has over a mile of beach and is surrounded by 400 wooded acres. Hiking, archery, and boating are just a few of the many activities available at Camp Sealth.
