The Global Visionaries (GV) Local Roots work team partners with Local Roots Farm, an organic farm on the banks of the Snoqualmie River, near the town of Carnation, about 25 miles from Seattle.  Local Roots is a diversified vegetable farm that delivers vegetables to Seattle farmers markets as well as the Madison Market co-op.  Local Roots leaders will accompany GV students to the farm and help them harvest vegetables and then create a meal out of them. 

Local Roots work team leaders will introduce high school students to the local food system in the Seattle region and the broader concepts of sustainable agriculture to which it connects.  They will be in charge of coordinating students for their monthly commitments, providing education curriculum to compliment the work that they are doing, and providing assistance as they develop their leadership skills and service ethic.  This internship is still in its pilot phase, we are trying to integrate student trips to help at farmers markets in Seattle in an attempt to connect the farm with their urban environment. 

The position is a 10 hour/month commitment, beginning in September/October 2011 and ending in June 2012, with the work team days once a month on Saturdays.  There will be three evening trainings in October.  The Work team intern is responsible for supporting GV participants, working closely with GV staff, and collaborating with Local Roots to lead the monthly service projects and education curriculum.  This internship is a great opportunity to work with youth around sustainable agriculture in a fun and active way!
This is an unpaid internship.

• Experience with agriculture issues and working with high school youth
• Passion and interest for service in our local community is a must
• Good communication and organizational skills are also important
